What the scheme provides

The Warm Home Discount for winter 2026 to 2027 is a one-off £150 discount on an eligible household’s energy bill. It is applied by the energy supplier rather than paid as cash, and it does not reduce any Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment you may receive.

The discount normally goes onto the electricity account. If the same supplier provides both your gas and electricity, it may be possible to have it applied to the gas bill instead, but you need to ask the supplier.

Who may qualify in England

Eligibility is based on circumstances on 23 August 2026. On that date, your electricity supplier must have been part of the scheme, you or your partner must have received a qualifying means-tested benefit, and you or your partner must have been named on the electricity bill.

The qualifying benefits listed by GOV.UK for England and Wales are Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and Pension Credit. The 2026 to 2027 eligibility statement confirms that the previous high-cost-to-heat property threshold is no longer part of the core-group test. Receiving a benefit after the qualifying date does not retrospectively change your circumstances on that date.

Most households do not need to apply

Government data matching should identify most eligible households automatically. Letters are due between late October 2026 and early January 2027. Some will confirm that no action is needed; others will ask for additional information because the benefit, supplier or bill details could not be matched.

If your letter asks for information, follow its instructions and contact the helpline by 26 February 2027. Once eligibility is confirmed, the supplier should apply the discount by 31 March 2027. Keep the letter until the credit appears on the account.

Prepayment meters and unusual billing arrangements

Households using traditional prepayment or pay-as-you-go electricity meters can still qualify. The supplier decides how the discount is delivered, which may be through a top-up voucher, so check any expiry date and redemption instructions carefully.

Park-home residents who buy electricity through a site owner are not normally direct customers of an electricity supplier. A separate Park Homes Warm Home Discount route may be available, with its own application and eligibility rules. Funding is limited, so use the official GOV.UK guidance rather than assuming the main automatic process applies.

What to check now

A landlord or managing agent cannot claim the resident’s discount simply because they own the property; the scheme follows the eligible benefit recipient, participating supplier and named bill account. Tenants and homeowners should make sure their supplier has their correct contact details.

  • Check that the electricity account name is correct.
  • Confirm that your supplier participates in the scheme.
  • Watch for a letter from late October through early January.
  • Respond by 26 February 2027 if more information is requested.
  • Contact the scheme if no letter arrives by early January and you believe you qualify.
  • Check the bill or prepayment balance for the credit by 31 March 2027.
